Chilean Scientists Create Vaccine Against Human Metapneumovirus

Currently, there are no specific treatments or vaccines available for hMPV, posing a substantial burden on global healthcare systems.

The IMII team, led by Dr. Alexis Kalergis, discovered the molecular mechanism by which hMPV evades the immune response. This revelation allowed them to design a vaccine that effectively counters the virus by activating dendritic cells, which stimulate key immune cells called T lymphocytes.

"The vaccine has shown high levels of protection in preclinical studies," Dr. Kalergis stated, with promising results published in The Journal of Immunology. The next step is human clinical trials, a crucial milestone on the path to distributing this vaccine to the public.

The IMII team also developed novel antibodies to combat hMPV, further bolstering the arsenal against this evasive pathogen. This breakthrough builds on Dr. Kalergis’ earlier work leading the development of the world’s first vaccine against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), another major respiratory pathogen.

Transmitted primarily through respiratory secretions, hMPV has an incubation period of five to six days and symptoms that include fever, cough, and breathing difficulties. Young children and the elderly are disproportionately affected, making this vaccine development a highly anticipated advancement in global public health.
