Bulgaria is bracing for a severe winter kickstart this Saturday, January 4th, as a sharp cold front sweeps across the country. The first week of the new year promises a mix of snow, rain, and bitterly cold temperatures, according to the latest forecasts from Nova Television and the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH).

The day starts with snow in Northern and Western Bulgaria, and rain in the eastern regions. By mid-morning, skies are expected to clear, but strong winds from the west-northwest will bring temperatures between 2°C and 7°C, making it feel much colder. The wind chill, along with the gusts, can cause significant discomfort.

Sunday brings a mix of sunshine and cloudy periods, with frost likely in some areas. Temperatures will dip as low as -9°C in the clear, still conditions of the western valleys, with high temperatures ranging between 3°C and 8°C.

The second week of January begins with sunny weather, becoming more changeable towards the middle of the week. Temperatures will begin to recover, peaking at around 15°C in the Danube Plain by midweek. However, rain and snow, heavier in Southern Bulgaria, are expected later in the week.

Saturday’s weather is set to be dynamic, with atmospheric pressure above average for the time of year, according to Blitz. Along the Black Sea coast, expect cloudy and rainy conditions in the morning, gradually clearing in the afternoon. Wind will blow moderately from the west-northwest, strengthening along the northern coast.

Maximum temperatures will range from 6°C to 8°C, with sea temperatures around 8°C to 10°C. The sea state will be moderate, 2-3 on the scale.
