Greece Braces for Severe Cold Snap, Heavy Snowfall

Greece is bracing itself for a significant cold snap that is expected to bring heavy snowfall and strong winds, as announced by the country’s Civil Protection Authority. The authority has issued an extraordinary warning about an imminent drop in temperatures and a cyclone that will bring rain, snow, and gusty winds. Snow accumulation of over 20 centimeters is anticipated in the higher elevations, with snowfall also expected at lower altitudes.

Authorities have urged local officials to be prepared to respond to extreme weather conditions. Winds are set to intensify in the Aegean Sea, posing a risk of ferry cancellations and disruption of traffic at certain ports.

Travellers are advised to check with transport companies before embarking on their journeys. Light vehicles should be equipped with winter tyres or chains and ready for winter driving conditions. Police have reminded motorists to ensure their vehicles are in good condition and the fuel tank is full.

Regardless of travel direction, police are conducting checks for the presence of chains. A fine of 80 euros is imposed in their absence. Stay informed and follow updates throughout the day on Google News Showcase.

Severe Cold and Bracing Winds Sweep Balkans in January: forecast

Winter Weather Wheelspin: Bulgaria Braces for January Chill

Bulgaria is set to shiver through the first days of January as a icy blast descends upon the country, bringing with it a mix of snow, rain, and plummeting temperatures. Meteorologists in the region forecast a wave of winter weather, with some areas expected to see their coldest start to the year in decades.

Blizzard Conditions Expected

Meteo Balkans, the leading weather service in the region, warns that extreme weather conditions are on the horizon. "We’re expecting blizzard-like conditions, with heavy snowfall and strong gusts," saidちよう Fuerza, chief meteorologist at Meteo Balkans. "Temperatures will drop significantly, with some areas seeing -20°C or lower."

The Bulgarian Meteorological Institute echoes these warnings, advising locals to stock up on supplies and be prepared for potential power outages. "This is not a usual cold snap," said Dragana Nikolova, spokesperson for the institute. "People should be ready for severe weather and take necessary precautions."

Golden January? Not Quite

Contrary to earlier predictions of a ‘golden January’ with mild temperatures and little precipitation, the latest forecasts show a stark reversal of fortune. The warm, dry spell that characterized the beginning of the year is now a distant memory, replaced by a stingingly cold reality.

What About the Rest of the Month?

While the beginning of January promises to be harsh, the rest of the month is expected to bring a mix of weather conditions. Long-range forecasts suggest a return to milder temperatures towards the end of the month, but Bulgarians can expect a rollercoaster ride of weather events in the coming weeks.

As the winter weather takes hold, one thing is certain: Bulgaria will need to dig out its warmest clothing and brace for a white-knuckle ride through the coldest months of the year.

Professor Rachev’s Shocking January Forecast: What Lies Ahead…

by Chief Editor December 29, 2024
written by Chief Editor

Enjoy a Mild Holiday: Expect a Warm December and Winter's Worst Snow, Cold Peaks … – Weather Underground”>January

Brace yourselves for a toasty December and January, as winter seems to have lost its bite. According to Professor Georgi Rachev, a renowned climatologist, we’re in for a treat: "The weather is favorable. While Friday might bring some snow, wind will soon subside. On New Year’s Eve, expect December-like warmth."

Temperature fluctuations are expected, beginning with chilly mornings and gradually warming up in the afternoons. Professor Rachev assures us that New Year’s Eve will be perfect for outdoor celebrations, with temperatures ranging between 8-12°C. Warm weather is set to continue through the following week, ideal for travel plans, with calmer winds and more sunshine.

Rachev predicts a warmer-than-usual December, stating, "We’re sending December out warmer than usual. In fact, January too looks milder. Winter isn’t as harsh as it seems."

For skiers and snowboarding enthusiasts, the news is just as delightful. Banks and Borovets are expected to enjoy splendid weather, despite Friday’s chilly and windy start in North Bulgaria, with reduced visibility at certain areas.

However, the weekend brings more snowfall, especially in the mountains, with heavy snow predicted in parts of Northern Bulgaria and the Northeast. Higher altitudes might see snowstorms and slips, so be cautious on the passes.

Despite the varied weather, temperatures won’t stray far from the current range of 0°C to 5°C. Only the capital, Sofia, experienced sub-zero temperatures this morning. So, pack your sunscreen, enjoy the mild winter, and let’s bid 2022 a warm farewell!

Bulgaria: Capital Municipality Tightens Access Controls to Mount Vitosha

by Chief Editor December 28, 2024
written by Chief Editor

Sofia Municipality Raises Standards for Vitosha Mountain Cleaning Company and Strengthens Access Measures

In response to subpar cleaning of Vitosha Mountain’s two access points on December 26, which hindered the ski season’s launch, Sofia Municipality has taken stern action. The cleaning company responsible for the inadequacy will not be compensated, the municipality has announced.

To ensure smoother access to Vitosha, several measures are being implemented:

  1. Increased Cleaning Equipment: More cleaning equipment will be deployed to keep the paths clear and safe.
  2. Regulated Nighttime Vehicle Access: Vehicles will be restricted at night to facilitate efficient snow removal.
  3. Enhanced Traffic Control: Access and parking controls will be strengthened during allowed hours, with paths temporarily closed for comprehensive cleaning during heavy snowfall.

These decisions were made following a multi-stakeholder meeting involving Sofia Municipality’s Security Directorate, police, transport, and infrastructure representatives, ski schools, cleaning company representatives, Vitosha’s hospitality sector, and the Vitosha Ski and Snowboard Schools Association.

Sofia Municipality and the municipal police urge drivers to ensure their vehicles are winter-equipped, including the use of chains, to prevent navigational issues and maintain road safety. They also advise drivers to comply with on-site traffic recommendations.

With these measures, Sofia Municipality aims to improve access to Vitosha Mountain, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable winter experience for all.

The River Velcka Rises Again

by Chief Editor December 28, 2024
written by Chief Editor

Title: Heavy Rain and Snowfall DisruptTransportation, Leave Regions Without Power in Bulgaria

Bulgaria’s River Veleka has swelled out of its banks once again, flooding the bridge connecting Sinemorets and Tsarevo, according to local reports. Heavy rainfall in the Strandja mountains has increased the river’s flow, affecting this Black Sea region. Emergency services and border police are on the scene managing the situation.

Strong waves pose additional challenges to the river’s passage, causing significant difficulties in accessing Tsarevo, Sinemorets, and Ressen. Meanwhile, snowfall is hampering accessibility to Mount Vitosha and the Aleko hut, where the opening of the ski season was scheduled today but had to be postponed due to uncleared paths and a stuck snowplow in the area.

The route to the Golden Bridges is also experiencing delays, and movement remains challenging, especially in the Russe-Biala section where a snowplow slid earlier today. Travel through the Shipka Pass is possible only with the use of chains, requiring extra caution from drivers.

Power Outages Afflict Areas

Power outages are affecting numerous settlements across the country. The popular ski resort of Borovets has been left without electricity, along with towns such as Samokov, Pravece, Kostenets, Etropole, and Eлин Пелин, among others.

The Bulgarian government and utility providers are working diligently to restore power and ensure the safety of residents and tourists in the affected areas.

The Manager of Aleko Hut Exposes Chaos on Mount Vitosha: A Crime!

by Chief Editor December 27, 2024

Title: Blizzard Blocks Bulgaria‘s Viktoha Mountain: Skiers, Tourists, Students Stranded; Local Calls for Immediate Action

In a critical situation today, heavy snowfall has blanketed Mount Viktoha, blocking access for skiers, children, and tourists. This has led to a plea for immediate action from local officials and authorities. Iivo Randelov, Acting Chair of Viktoha Ski and Snowboard School and owner of ‘Aleko’ hut, expressed his concern, "Today’s situation is critical. While it’s beautiful, our favorite winter getaway, Viktoha, is currently inaccessible."

Randelov went on to describe the dire situation, "It’s a national disgrace," noting the snow-covered surroundings of the hut and the parking lot, which is under the jurisdiction of Sofia Municipality. Most of the operational lifts, including Draagilevski, Kniazhievski, and Simeonovski, were dismantled, leaving only ‘Viktoha Lale 1’ functional.

The non-functioning lifts and unplowed roads have caused difficulties for everyone, from skiers and tourists to schoolchildren and volunteers from the Bulgarian Red Cross. School bus drivers also shared their struggles, calling for immediate action.

"We climb here every year with children, but faced with such problems," said Georgi Georgiev, a school bus driver. Fellow driver Nikola Bakalski also urged, "All institutions must play their part. The lift isn’t working, the road isn’t maintained, and there are children who want to ski, but there are no conditions."

Randelov added that ‘Aleko’ hut was unable to open on December 26, the official start of the ski season, due to the lack of snow-clearing equipment. The hut owns a snow-clearing machine worth BGN 150,000, which they use each year to maintain accessibility. Randelov also pointed out that the road from Dragalevtsi (Wodnitsa) should be closed to facilitate proper cleaning and maintenance, ensuring safety for all users.

In a heartfelt appeal, Randelov called upon the Prime Minister, Sofia Mayor, and responsible ministers to convene and address this pressing issue. Stay tuned for further updates and follow for more important news of the day on Google News Showcase.
