Sofia Region Unaffected by Snowfall: All Roads Open and Passable

Rumen Sechanski, director of Sofia Regional Road Management, has confirmed that all roads in the Sofia region remain open and passable despite recent snowfall. "There are no closed sections," he told BNT.

Sechanski reassured the public that there’s no need to close any roads, given that his department maintains about 1,600 kilometers of roads across the region. He emphasized that all roads in the Sofia region are accessible, although they are snow-covered. In case of severe conditions, Sechanski said they may temporarily halt heavy vehicle traffic.

He advised drivers to exercise increased caution while driving. Snow can be found along the Struma Motorway (A3) and Hemus Motorway (A1). Motorways are being treated with salt and calcium chloride, but Sechanski warned that surfaces might still be slippery.

In light of the weather conditions, drivers are urged to take necessary precautions and allow extra time for journeys. Regular updates on road conditions can be found on the Sofia Regional Road Management’s official website and social media platforms.

Half of Bulgaria Trapped in Snow Captivity: Powerless Cities, Stranded Residents – PHOTOS

Snowstorm Leaves Hundreds of Thousands Across Bulgaria Without Power; Thousands Stranded

Hundreds of towns and villages have been left in the dark as heavy snowstorms sweep across Bulgaria, causing widespread power outages and disrupting travel. According to local reports, thousands of residents have been stranded without electricity for hours to even days in some cases.

Power Outages Widespread

Sofia, the capital, was one of the hardest hit cities, with many districts left without power. Residents took to social media to share their experiences and express frustration. "We’ve been without heat and light for over 12 hours now," said one user. "It’s freezing in our apartment."

Similar scenes played out in other major cities like Plovdiv and Varna. In Plovdiv, the city’s mayor confirmed that thousands of residents were without power, with some areas remaining unconnected for over a day.

Travel Chaos

Beyond the power outages, the severe weather has also caused travel chaos. Roads were blocked by fallen trees and power lines, stranding motorists and commuters. Schools and public transportation were closed in many regions, causing disruptions for families and workers alike.

In the Smolyan region, snowdrifts blocked roads leading to 12 villages, leaving residents isolated. While emergency services worked to clear the roads, some villagers resorted to using sleds and snowshoes to reach neighboring towns.

Restoration Efforts Ongoing

Power companies have been working around the clock to restore power. EVN, one of Bulgaria’s largest power distribution companies, reported that they had dispatched emergency teams to affected areas.

As the storm begins to abate, many Bulgarians are hoping that power will be fully restored by day’s end. Until then, residents are resorting to candles, fires, and generators to stay warm and powered.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

Heavy Snowfall Batters Bulgaria,.authorities warn against travel in affected areas, Dangerous conditions persist

UPDATE: Road conditions in the Petrich Pass (Petrohan) have been cleared, and the route is now passable, according to authorities. However, motorists are urged to proceed with caution due to potential remnants of snow and ice.

In what authorities are calling a ‘whiteout scenario,’ heavy snowfall has battered parts of Bulgaria, leading to severe road closures and travel warnings. The western part of the country, especially the mountain pass of Petrich (Petrohan), has been particularly hard hit, with snowdrifts reaching record heights.

Earlier today, an car is believed to have lost control and plowed off the road at the Petrich Pass, luckily without serious injuries reported. Authorities are reminding drivers to remain cautious and only travel if absolutely necessary.

"Petrohan has been hit hard," said a spokesperson for the regional administration. "Road maintenance teams are working tirelessly to keep the route clear, but fresh snowfall is making it a challenging task."

ORIGINAL REPORT: Videos and images shared on social media show vehicles struggling to navigate the snow-covered roads, with many spinning out of control. Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.

The storm has also caused significant disruptions on highways, with multiple accidents reported and numerous vehicles requiring assistance. Over 40 snow-clearing machines have been deployed across Montana Province to tackle the heavy snowfall.

Forecasts suggest that the snowstorm may continue into the evening, with further accumulations and dangerous driving conditions expected. Motorists are encouraged to check road conditions before setting out and to plan their routes accordingly.

Orange and Yellow Alert: Snow, Rain, and Wind Expected for Christmas

by Chief Editor December 24, 2024
written by Chief Editor

Breaking Weather Alert: Bulgaria Braces for Orange and Yellow Warnings as Snow, Rain, and Wind Sweep Across the Country

The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) has issued orange and yellow weather warnings for December 25, affecting most of Bulgaria. Only the regions of Kystendil and Blagoevgrad are exception to these alerts.

The weather outlook for the next 24 hours is set to become increasingly complicated. Moderate to strong winds from the north-northeast will usher in cold air, particularly in Eastern Bulgaria. Expect overcast skies with widespread, at times heavy, rainfall across the country. The higher elevations of the Pre-Balkans and the mountainous regions will experience snow, while the rest of the country will see rain. As temperatures drop in Central North Bulgaria and later in the Ludogorie region, rain will transition to snow. Minimum temperatures will range from around -1°C in the western basins to 8°C-10°C along the Black Sea coast, with maximum temperatures mainly between 2°C and 7°C, reaching up to 10°C-12°C along the Black Sea coast. Atmospheric pressure will rise and be above average for the month.

The Black Sea coast will be cloudy and rainy, with strong northeast winds. Maximum temperatures will range between 10°C and 12°C, with sea water temperatures at 10°C-11°C. Sea conditions will deteriorate, reaching 4-5 on the wave height scale.

In the mountains, expect overcast and foggy conditions with snowfall. Passes will experience hazardous conditions, with snowdrifts and ice formation. Strong winds, temporarily gusting, from the east-northeast will blow across the mountains. Maximum temperatures at 1200 meters will be around 0°C, dropping to around -3°C at 2000 meters.

On Thursday, moderate to strong northeast winds will continue across the eastern half of the country, bringing cooler air. Rainfall will persist, with significant snowfall expected in Central North Bulgaria, the Western Pre-Balkans, and the Rhodope region. Snowdrifts and ice formation are likely in these areas. High altitude basins in Western Bulgaria and the rest of the country will experience snow and rain, respectively.

By Friday, winds will ease to moderate in the eastern half but may temporarily shift to the north-northwest in the western half. Snowfall is expected, but its intensity and coverage should decrease throughout the day, according to news sources.

Bulgaria Faces Greek Winter Overnight

by Chief Editor December 23, 2024
written by Chief Editor

Bulgaria‘s Winter: Petrich and Sandan Skip to Greece; Snowy Christmas Awaits

Prof. Georgi Rakhev of the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) reveals that Bulgaria’s winter is in full swing, with temperatures and conditions in the Petričko-Sandansko field region and Drama being nearly identical. "Serres and Drama have the same climate as Petrich and Sandanski," he notes, "However, Petrich can experience and maintain lower temperatures due to isolation from the warm waters of the Aegean Sea by the Belasica and Rodopa Mountains."

As for the upcoming holidays, Rakhev predicts widespread snowfall across Bulgaria. While Sofiia and lower regions may experience rain and dampness initially, a powerful anti-cyclone from the northeast forming on December 26 and 27 will bring colder air and potential snowfall even to lower elevations. Ski resorts like Bansko, Borovets, and Pamporovo are expected to receive significant snowfall, with accumulations exceeding 0.5 meters by December 27.

Rakhev assures that despite initial drizzle, snow will be a mainstay for the Christmas and New Year celebrations, transforming Bulgarian landscapes into a winter wonderland. Stay tuned for more updates on Google News Showcase.
