Breaking Weather Alert: Bulgaria Braces for Orange and Yellow Warnings as Snow, Rain, and Wind Sweep Across the Country

The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) has issued orange and yellow weather warnings for December 25, affecting most of Bulgaria. Only the regions of Kystendil and Blagoevgrad are exception to these alerts.

The weather outlook for the next 24 hours is set to become increasingly complicated. Moderate to strong winds from the north-northeast will usher in cold air, particularly in Eastern Bulgaria. Expect overcast skies with widespread, at times heavy, rainfall across the country. The higher elevations of the Pre-Balkans and the mountainous regions will experience snow, while the rest of the country will see rain. As temperatures drop in Central North Bulgaria and later in the Ludogorie region, rain will transition to snow. Minimum temperatures will range from around -1°C in the western basins to 8°C-10°C along the Black Sea coast, with maximum temperatures mainly between 2°C and 7°C, reaching up to 10°C-12°C along the Black Sea coast. Atmospheric pressure will rise and be above average for the month.

The Black Sea coast will be cloudy and rainy, with strong northeast winds. Maximum temperatures will range between 10°C and 12°C, with sea water temperatures at 10°C-11°C. Sea conditions will deteriorate, reaching 4-5 on the wave height scale.

In the mountains, expect overcast and foggy conditions with snowfall. Passes will experience hazardous conditions, with snowdrifts and ice formation. Strong winds, temporarily gusting, from the east-northeast will blow across the mountains. Maximum temperatures at 1200 meters will be around 0°C, dropping to around -3°C at 2000 meters.

On Thursday, moderate to strong northeast winds will continue across the eastern half of the country, bringing cooler air. Rainfall will persist, with significant snowfall expected in Central North Bulgaria, the Western Pre-Balkans, and the Rhodope region. Snowdrifts and ice formation are likely in these areas. High altitude basins in Western Bulgaria and the rest of the country will experience snow and rain, respectively.

By Friday, winds will ease to moderate in the eastern half but may temporarily shift to the north-northwest in the western half. Snowfall is expected, but its intensity and coverage should decrease throughout the day, according to news sources.
