Utrecht Awakes to Yellow Alert as Morning Rush Gets Underway
Utrecht residents began their Tuesday morning under a yellow alert, with Dutch authorities warning of potential travel disruptions due to heavy rainfall and strong winds.
The code yellow, second only to orange and red in the Netherlands’ four-tier weather alert system, was issued by the Dutch meteorological institute (KNMI) on Monday evening, as a depression hovering over the North Sea threatened to bring adverse weather conditions.
As the first light of day broke, Utrecht woke to a symphony of squawking wind and pounding rain, with gusts up to 70 km/h battering the city. Trees swayed, and umbrellas turned inside out as residents hurried to work and school, navigating flooded streets and blown-over bikes.
Public transport was the first to feel the pinch, with delays and cancellations reported across Utrecht’s bus, tram, and train networks. The yellow alert, which remains in effect until 1 pm today, is expected to keep travel conditions challenging throughout the morning rush.
Motorists too have been advised to exercise caution, with wet roads and reduced visibility posing additional hazards. Drivers have been urged to follow safe driving practices, including reducing speed and increasing following distances.
While the KNMI anticipates the worst of the weather to have abated by the early afternoon, Utrecht residents can expect a soggy and windy remainder of the day. Schools and businesses have been advised to monitor updates and take necessary precautions to ensure safety.
