Brace yourself for potential delays on both roads and trains as the Meteorological Institute has issued an orange alert for heavy snowfall. Up to 30 to 40 centimeters of snow is expected to fall within the next 24 hours, with localized areas receiving up to 50 centimeters.
The alert, initially focused on the southern tip of Mjøsa, has been extended northwards, now covering Oslo as well. "We’re expecting challenging conditions throughout Monday," says Statens meteorolog Terje Alsvik Walløe.
Starting Sunday night, snow and wind will hit Agder, spreading north to the Eastern part of the country by Monday morning. "This means a extended period of snowfall and wind, particularly challenging for traffic," Walløe warns.
Preparation and Precautions
Schools and kindergartens are advised to prepare for potential closures on Monday. Bane Nor, which operates Norwegian railways, has boosted its preparedness since last year’s snowstorm, ensuring sufficient brine capacity.
"We’ll do our best to cope with the situation," says Bane Nor’s Mari Aanensen Rjaanes. However, she anticipates significant challenges, particularly in the Oslo area with its frequent train services.
Innlandstrafikk, which manages regional public transport, will assess the need for additional staffing or other measures throughout the day. Stine Fredriksen, press officer at Innlandstrafikk, expresses concern about the subsequent mild weather later in the week, which could lead to slippery roads causing delays and route adjustments.
Vegvesenet’s Warning
The Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Statens vegvesen) cautions that driving conditions could become difficult. "We advise everyone to take precautions, be attentive, and check weather and road conditions before setting off," the Vegtrafikksentralen in the south warns.
On Tuesday, rain is expected near the coast, potentially making roads slippery. Strong winds accompanying the snowfall may also cause localized snowdrifts and reduced visibility.
