CABA Rejects Nation’s Proposal to Delay School Start Date; Classes to Begin in Late February
In a quick response to a request by the national tourism secretary, Daniel Scioli, the City of Buenos Aires government has dismissed the idea of postponing the start of the 2025 school year to prioritize tourism. The education sector remains untouchable in the city, officials confirm.
Scioli had suggested to the Jorge Macri administration that it reconsider the school calendar to extend the tourist season in coastal destinations, especially given that Buenos Aires residents make up a significant portion of visitors. However, the city swiftly reacted and rejected the proposal.
"Education always comes first,"
the government reaffirmed, making it clear that the school calendar would not be altered at the expense of other sectors.
Laura Alonso, the city’s spokesperson, was quick to respond to Scioli’s suggestion. She emphasized that education is non-negotiable in the city and that the initial start dates for the new school year will remain unchanged.
"In our city, education is an unquestionable priority, and the start of classes is not open to discussion,"
Alonso reiterated.
While acknowledging the importance of tourism, city officials maintain that they will not compromise the education of its young citizens.
As a result, students in the city will kick off the new school year as planned. Schools will start the academic year on February 24, 2025, for initial and primary levels, while secondary schools will begin their term on March 5, 2025, sources confirmed.
