Gas Reserves in European Storage Facilities Plummet at Alarming Rates

European gas storage facilities are depleting at an unprecedented pace, with current levels reaching a critical low. According to Bloomberg, storage sites are currently around 70% full, a significant drop from last year’s 86% at this time.

Data from Gas Infrastructure Europe, also reported by Bloomberg, reveals a stark decline in storage levels, down by 25% from peak values. This is the most severe drop recorded during this period since 2018.

Adding to the growing concern, Ukraine has formally ceased the transit of Russian gas to Europe as of January 1, 2025. These concurrent events have left European energy markets on edge, with policymakers scrambling to secure alternative supply sources and bolster resilience against potential shortfalls.
