According to preliminary reports shared by journalist Jesús García, the hearing revealed that Ovidio and Joaquín have yet to reach an agreement with U.S. prosecutors, despite ongoing negotiations since at least October 2024. The defence team has been engaged in discussions with authorities in an effort to reach a plea bargain that could potentially reduce their sentences.

The process so far: Ovidio Guzmán has been under investigation in the U.S. since 2019 on charges related to drug trafficking and money laundering. He, along with his brothers, is named in the谩ccusation 1:09-cr-00383 in the Northern District of Illinois, facing five criminal charges including drug possession with intent to distribute, drug conspiracy, money laundering, participating in a continuing criminal enterprise, and firearm possession.

The developments: Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman authorized several prosecutorial motions, most notably enabling Ovidio and Joaquín to be potentially processed separately. The judge scheduled Ovidio’s next court appearance for February 27 at 1:30 PM, with Joaquín’s set for March 19 at 10:30 AM.

Legal representation: Jeffrey Lichtman, the brothers’ lawyer, participated in the hearing via telephone due to inclement weather caused by a winter storm, preventing him from attending in person. Lichtman previously announced in October 2024 that Ovidio and Joaquín had initiated negotiations with U.S. prosecutors aimed at securing a guilty plea.
