Renowned Bulgarian composer Alexander Savelyev, critically injured in a gas cylinder explosion at his home in the Sofia district of "Lozenez" on January 4, has succumbed to his injuries at Pirogov Hospital. The hospital confirmed his death.
The 66-year-old musician, who had previously studied at the Conservatory with a specialization in flute, was admitted to the hospital on Saturday in a critical state, with extensive and deep burns, and burns in the upper respiratory tract. The explosion in his Sofia residence also led to a fire in the building, which spread to an adjacent house. Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze.
Tragically, songstress Christina Dimitrova expressed her shock and sorrow on social media, "I am devastated. An incredibly humble and kind, intelligent, and unique musician, composer, and person has left us. I had so many plans with him. It’s just so cruel. Rest in peace, Alexander."
Journalist and translator Olympia Al-Ahmed also paid her respects, writing, "I still can’t believe it… Why, Lord? My dear friend, composer Alexander Savelyev, left us today at noon. I had an odd feeling today and called his phone at 2 pm, but no one picked up… Forever in our hearts, Sasha."
Savelyev’s prolific career spanned over three decades, during which he composed more than 800 songs and over 1500 arrangements. He worked with numerous music legends such as Emil Dimitrov, Christina Dimitrova,velin Goranov, Vasil Petrov, Neli Rangelova, Petya Buuklieva, and Georgi Stanchev. His music will continue to resonate with Bulgarian audiences, celebrating his immense talent and contribution to the country’s music scene.
