European leaders have united in their criticism of tech mogul Elon Musk, accuse him of threatening democracies by meddling in the politics of countries like Germany. Musk, who is also an advisor to the incoming U.S. President Donald Trump, has expressed his support for Alice Weidel, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party’s candidate for chancellor in the upcoming elections.

Musk’s provocative remarks have not gone unnoticed. He has dubbed the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz as "clueless," and labeled the President Frank-Walter Steinmeier as a "tyrant." These comments, along with his endorsement of AfD, have drawn sharp rebukes from European leaders.

German leader faces Musk’s wrath

The billionaire is set to host a live interview with Weidel on his social media platform next Thursday, further fueling concerns about his political influence. Weidel’s party is considered an extremist group by many in Europe, and its ascendancy is viewed as a threat to the continent’s democratic values.

Commission taps brakes on Musk’s activities

The European Commission (EC) has weighed in on the situation, stressing that while Musk’s freedom of expression should not be constrained, any potential risks to democracy will be scrutinized under the Digital Services Act. Thomas Regnier, EC’s spokesperson, alluded to the need for platform regulation, stating that certain boundaries must be respected, especially when such influence is used to undermine democratic processes.

Macron and allies sound the alarm

French President Emmanuel Macron went a step further, accusing Musk of promoting a "new reactionary international," and interfering in the electoral processes of other nations. He warned that an alliance of private financial interests is exploiting the weaknesses of liberal democracies, putting them at risk.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre echoed Macron’s concerns, expressing worry about Musk’s significant influence on social media and his direct intervention in other countries’ internal affairs. Støre emphasized the importance of respecting democratic norms and alliances.

Critics slam Musk’s ‘chaos’ strategy

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer joined the backlash, defending his colleague Jess Phillips against Musk’s attacks. Musk had accused Phillips of being an "apologist for genocide by rape" for opposing his calls for a public inquiry into organized child sex abuse claims. Starmer condemned Musk’s tactics, stating that "those who spread lies" do so to promote intimidation and violence.

Christian Lindner, head of the German FDP party and former finance minister, added his voice to the criticism. While acknowledging Musk’s admiration for the businessman, Lindner suggested that Musk’s goal is to create chaos and weaken Germany by backing the far-right.

Musk’s antics: Free speech or threat to democracies?

While some argue that Musk’s comments are protected by freedom of speech, others warn that his activities pose a serious threat to democratic institutions. As European leaders scrutinize his influence, the debate over the power of tech moguls and their responsibility towards democratic values continues to rage on.
