U.S. Condemns ‘Kidnapping‘ of Venezuelan Opposition Figure’s Son-in-Law
The United States government has strongly condemned the apparent kidnapping of Caracas“>Rafael Tudares, the son-in-law of Venezuela‘s opposition President-elect, Edmundo González Urrutia. Tudares was intercepted by armed, masked men while taking his children to school in Caracas this morning, according to González Urrutia.
"The U.S. condemns the attempts by Nicolás Maduro and his proxies to intimidate Venezuela’s democratic opposition," said the Department of State in a statement. "Repression and intimidation cannot hide the truth." Maduro’s government has not yet responded to the incident.
González Urrutia, currently in the U.S., has been rallying international support for his upcoming presidency. He has dubbed the act a "kidnapping" and is calling for immediate action to find Tudares. "This is an attempt to intimidate not just my family, but all those who dare to challenge Maduro’s dictatorship," he said.
Tudares was reportedly forced into a gold-colored vehicle with the license plate AA54E2C and has been missing since. The U.S. State Department has urged restraint and echoes González Urrutia’s call for a swift resolution to the incident.
