Headline: Massive Data Breach: Personal Location Data of Tens of Thousands of Norwegians Leaked

Article:

Up to tens of thousands of Norwegians may have had their personal data leaked in a potential mega-breach, according to Norwegian public broadcaster NRK. The data, reportedly detailing individuals’ movements, has been published on Russian hacker forums. The alleged leak occurred over one hour in January this year.

"This is potentially massive. It could affect anyone," Tobias Judin, section chief at the Norwegian data protection authority (Datatilsynet), told NRK.

The breach was also confirmed by Reuters, which reported on Thursday that the targeted company is U.S.-based Gravy Analytics, specialists in location tracking. Experts who analyzed the published data have confirmed its authenticity.

"Based on my preliminary analysis, I believe it’s legitimate," said Marly Smith at cybersecurity firm RedSense.

Gravy Analytics merged with Norwegian firm Unacast in 2023, both specializing in location data analysis, often sourced from smartphone apps. Such data can reveal sensitive details about individuals’ lives, including their home addresses, workplaces, unusual movements, relationships, or even competitive workplaces, Judin explained to NRK.

However, neither Reuters nor NRK has been able to contact Gravy Analytics or Unacast for comment.

This breach highlights the growing concern around data security, particularly with regards to sensitive location data. If confirmed, it could have significant consequences for those affected.
