A 19-year-old driver from the Pловdiv village of Staro Zh nizare is responsible for a tragic crash on the Pловdiv-Karlovo highway over the weekend, leaving two elderly couples dead. The driver, identified as Iilia I., has been detained despite being hospitalized, as per the Plovdiv Regional Court.
The incident occurred after Iilia, accompanied by his 16-year-old girlfriend from Rzhevo Konaare, picked up two friends from Dupanlii and another from Staro Zh elazere. A heated argument between the couple escalated while the car was in motion, with the girl striking Iilia and forcefully grabbing the steering wheel. The car lost control, veered into oncoming traffic, and collided head-on with another vehicle, killing a 60-year-old man and his 61-year-old wife on the spot.
The crash left Iilia, his girlfriend, and the three passengers in his car with severe injuries, all of whom remain hospitalized. Iilia is facing charges of causing death by reckless driving and inflicting serious injuries on his passengers and the other driver.
Tests revealed no trace of alcohol or drugs in Iilia’s system. He has held a driver’s license for just over a year. The investigation is ongoing.
This tragic incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by distractions and road rage behind the wheel. It underscores the importance of responsible driving and healthy communication, especially among young drivers.
