Road Salters in Action: Rijkswaterstaat Spreads Over 1 Million Kilos of Salt to Combat Ice

Road Weather Update: Winter Storm Brings Snow, Glazed Roads to the Netherlands

The Netherlands is grappling with a winter storm that has blanketed parts of Limburg with up to 8 centimeters of snow, prompting the Dutch Meteorological Institute (KNMI) to issue an ‘orange’ weather code. This code signifies heavy snowfall and strong winds, expected to continue until midday.

In response to deteriorating road conditions, Rijkswaterstaat, the executive agency of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, has deployed road salt in large quantities. Over a million kilos of salt have been spread to ensure road safety and prevent accidents due to ice and snow. The agency has implemented a ‘yellow’ code, signaling glazed roads, to warn drivers of hazardous conditions.

The southern regions of the Netherlands are experiencing road congestion due to both the weather conditions and the increased traffic during this period. Motorists are advised to exercise caution, adhere to road signs, and be prepared for unexpected delays.

In Gelderland, drizzle and light snowfall are expected throughout the day, with no significant disruptions anticipated. The province’s traffic agency has warned of potential slipperiness on roads, urging drivers to take appropriate precautions.

The KNMI has announced that another ‘yellow’ code will come into effect from 5 PM onwards, indicating the possibility of ice formation and making road travel challenging.

Drivers are advised to check the latest weather and traffic updates, plan their journeys accordingly, and prioritize safe driving practices to navigate the winter storm effectively.
