Danish Prime Minister Requests Meeting with Trump Following Comments on Greenland

Analysis: Danish PM Seeks Dialogue with Trump After Grenland Comments

In an unexpected turn of geopolitical events, Ditlev Fredericksen, the Danish Prime Minister, has requested talks with incoming U.S. President Donald Trump following his comments about potentially taking control of Greenland through military force. This move comes just days after Trump’s assertion that the use of military or economic power to gain control of the island is "a possibility."

Fredericksen, speaking to journalists on Thursday, confirmed the request for dialogue, saying, "We have proposed a conversation [with Trump], and I hope it will happen." She added that the conversation is likely to occur after Trump’s inauguration on January 20.

The Danish Prime Minister’s comments follow Trump’s remarks, which sparked controversy and debate. Despite Trump’s claims, Fredericksen stressed there’s no reason to believe that the incoming U.S. president plans an invasion of Greenland. She underlined the importance of close cooperation between the two NATO allies.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen also went public with a response, urging Trump to be taken seriously but not literally. He expressed respect for Greenland’s strive for independence and emphasized the Danish government’s desire to avoid confrontation with the U.S.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump Jr., the U.S. President-elect’s son, visited Greenland this week, where he met with local residents and shared photos on social media of Greenlanders wearing "MAGA" (Make America Great Again) caps, claiming that Greenland "loves America and Trump." However, a Greenlandic official later revealed that the visit was "staged."

U.S.-outgoing Secretary of State Antony Blinken also commented on the issue, stating that Trump’s idea about Greenland is "not a good idea" and "won’t happen." He emphasized the importance of collaboration between allies for both countries’ strength and effectiveness.

As the conversation around Greenland heats up, all eyes are on the Trump administration’s next move in the Arctic. Stay tuned to Delfi for more updates on this developing story.
