Title: Deadly Winter Storm Batters U.S., Leaving Five Dead and Millions Affected
Article:
At least five people have lost their lives, and dozens more have been injured as a powerful winter storm sweeps through several states in the U.S., bringing heavy snowfall and temperatures below freezing. The storm, one of the worst to hit the southern region of the country, has affected millions of Americans, causing power outages and forcing schools and non-essential businesses to close.
In Missouri, one of the hardest-hit states, a person died, and 38 others were injured in 436 road accidents, according to the latest authorities’ report. In neighboring Kansas, two people died over the weekend when their vehicle left the road and rolled down an embankment. Both occupants were ejected from the vehicle and were found not to be wearing seatbelts.
seperately, Houston, Texas, also felt the storm’s impact, with one person found dead near a bus stop, as reported by NBC News.
The storm is currently wreaking havoc in Kentucky, Indiana, Virginia, West Virginia, Illinois, and Missouri, with governors declaring states of emergency. As a result, schools and non-essential activities have been shut down in these areas.
More than 60 million Americans have been affected by this storm, which has also led to thousands of flight cancellations and power outages in some areas. The National Weather Service (NWS) predicts light snowfall in western Texas before a major storm hits on Thursday. Meanwhile, snow warnings along the eastern coast have been lifted, having affected over 60 million people since Sunday.
As the storm moves towards Arkansas and Oklahoma, it is expected to continue impacting the central and western parts of the country, bringing strong winds to southern California. "The strong winds and low humidity will create critical and extreme fire weather conditions in southern California until Thursday," NWS warned.
This storm is one of the deadliest and most impactful to hit the southern U.S. in recent years, serving as a stark reminder of the often devastating power of winter weather events.
