After a year of intensive double penalties targeting organized drug trafficking and intimidating criminal motorcycle gangs, Christiania’s Pusher Street has been completely transformed. The initiative, dubbed "Doble Straffen," has been officially lauded as a resounding success by Copenhagen’s Police Chief, Anne Tønnes.
Speaking on the remarkable turnaround, Tønnes shared, "The organized drug crime and criminal, intimidating motorcycle gangs are gone. The area is increasingly perceived as peaceful and safe. The double penalties have achieved exactly what we hoped for."
The high-profile penalties, spearheaded in response to a series of bloody incidents, has now been discontinued. The city’s inhabitants officially parted ways with hash dealing in Pusher Street last April.
The infamous ‘Green Light District,’ once a symbol of Christiania’s open drug trade, is now a stark contrast to its colorful past. The double penalties, which included impounding vehicles and revoking driving licenses of repeat offenders, have proved instrumental in quelling the once-thriving illicit trade.
