Bulgaria‘s Full Schengen Zone Membership Praised by PM; Border Crossing Efficiency a Priority
In a visit to the Danube Bridge checkpoint at Ruse, Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev reaffirmed Bulgaria’s commitment to maintaining the smooth flow of traffic as the country prepares for full Schengen zone membership. The PM expressed surprise at recent reports suggesting parking tickets would be issued to heavy vehicle drivers but emphasized the government’s swift response to address the issue.
"We must prioritize two principles," Glavchev stated, "ensuring vehicles pass through as quickly as possible, and avoiding disruption to the daily lives of Ruse residents in case of delays." He mentioned seeing around 10 trucks at the buffer parking area before the border crossing, highlighting the need for efficient traffic management.
Glavchev confirmed that maximum bridge capacity would be utilized to prevent backlogs. He also acknowledged concerns about increased truck traffic following the resumption of Danube Bridge repairs and the potential reapplication of existing traffic management systems. The PM has urged Ruse’s regional governor and mayor to implement measures to expedite border crossing.
A between-ministries committee, established to tackle buffer parking issues, has proposed solutions including increased state involvement in regulating the process. Glavchev stressed the government’s dedication to preserving the achievements made towards Schengen zone integration and avoiding setbacks.
