President Donald Trump is facing renewed opposition, this time from within his own Republican party.
Representative Thomas Massie is calling on Trump’s Justice Department to reveal information regarding associates of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
“We want the names of the men who Epstein trafficked women to be made public,” Massie said, according to USA Today.
To date, the Justice Department has released 3.5 million documents out of a total of six million documents related to Epstein. However, many names and other details have been redacted from the released documents.
Members of Congress have had access to the unredacted papers since Monday.
Massie and Democratic Representative Ro Khanna stated they identified at least six men whose names were improperly redacted from the released documents after reviewing the files for two hours at the Justice Department.
Massie stated that these men are likely guilty of crimes alongside Epstein and that their identities should not have been withheld without justification, similar to the victims.
The Justice Department has stated that no further documents will be released. Trump himself has said that Americans should simply forget the entire scandal.
Trump states he severed ties with Epstein in the early 2000s. No significant new information about Trump has been found in the document releases, but some material remains redacted.
Massie is Behind the Epstein Law
Much of the release of the Epstein files is due to the efforts of Massie and Khanna, who jointly authored legislation to compel their release in September.
After a lengthy battle, Trump ultimately ordered the release of investigative material related to the notorious sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. However, it became clear at that point that the U.S. Congress would vote to release the documents regardless.
Trump Wants to Make an Example of Massie
President Trump is reportedly angered by Republican Representative Massie’s overt opposition to the White House.
Massie has stated that a congressperson’s role is not to blindly follow the orders of a commander-in-chief, as a soldier would.
Prior to pushing for the law requiring the release of the Epstein documents, Massie criticized Trump’s tax cut package, calling it a “great and beautiful deal.”
