Titan Weightlifting: A Rising Tide of Strength and Success
The TCU Titans weightlifting team continues to make waves, recently achieving impressive results at the Minnesota State High School Weightlifting Championships in Cannon Falls. The team secured three podium finishes and, crucially, two state champions – a testament to the dedication of the athletes and the coaching staff.
Dominating Performances: Rotter and Vosejpka Claim Gold
Max Rotter, already a state and national champion in 2025 at the U13 level, proved his continued dominance by winning the U17 boys 60 kg category. His successful lifts included 57, 61, and 63 kg in the snatch, and 76, 78, and 83 kg in the clean & jerk, totaling 146 kg. Jakov Vosejpka mirrored this success in the U17 boys 94 kg category, achieving a total of 175 kg with lifts of 75, 80, and 80 kg in the snatch, and 95, 100, and 110 kg in the clean & jerk.
Podium Finishes and Battling Through Adversity
Caleigh Hoefs secured a third-place finish in the women’s 86 kg category with a total of 131 kg, lifting 56, 58, and 60 kg in the snatch, and 69, 71, and 73 kg in the clean & jerk. Morgan Meier, despite battling illness, also earned a third-place spot in the women’s 58 kg category, totaling 97 kg with lifts of 42, 44, and 44 kg in the snatch, and 55, 55, and 57 kg in the clean & jerk.
Q-Point Rankings and State-Wide Recognition
Beyond the podium finishes, Rotter and Vosejpka demonstrated their overall strength within the state competition. Rotter achieved 237.494 Q-points, placing him 35th among all lifters, while Vosejpka followed closely in 45th with 218.068 Q-points. These Q-points are a measure of a lifter’s performance relative to their peers.
The Role of Coaching and Junior Varsity Success
Head Coach Andrew Meier highlighted the team’s overall success, noting that seven lifters competed at state, four made the podium, and two emerged as state champions. The success of junior varsity (JV) lifters like Rotter and Vosejpka underscores the strength of the program’s development pipeline. Previously, both Rotter and Annika Meier qualified for state competition as JV lifters, with Rotter achieving an AQT greater than 125 with a total of 130 KG in the 60 KG boys junior varsity category in December 2025.
The Growing Popularity of Weightlifting
The increasing success of programs like TCU’s reflects a broader trend: the growing popularity of weightlifting among high school athletes. This surge is driven by a greater understanding of the sport’s benefits – not just in terms of strength, but also in developing discipline, focus, and overall athleticism. Weightlifting is increasingly recognized as a foundational sport that can enhance performance in other activities.
