A suspect is dead after ramming a truck into Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan, Thursday afternoon, according to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard. No students or staff were reported injured in the incident.
Details of the Attack
Law enforcement responded to what was initially reported as an “active shooter situation” at the synagogue, located on 5725 Walnut Lake Road. Bouchard stated the suspect drove through the building’s doors and down a hallway before being confronted by synagogue security. Sources confirmed to CBS News the suspect exited the vehicle with a rifle and was shot by security personnel.
One of the lead security personnel was hit by the vehicle and knocked unconscious, but is expected to recover after being taken to a local hospital. Investigators are clearing the suspect’s vehicle as a precaution, due to something inside having ignited, Bouchard said.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the FBI is responding at the scene. Multiple agencies, including West Bloomfield police, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, and Michigan State Police, were involved in the response.
Community Response and Safety Measures
Nearby school districts – West Bloomfield, West Bloomfield Middle School, Doherty Elementary School, and Bloomfield Hills – initiated secure mode protocols. The Jewish Federation of Detroit requested all Jewish organizations implement “lockout protocol.”
Authorities asked the public to avoid the area. Michigan State Police increased patrols at other places of worship. The Ann Arbor Police Department also increased patrols around local houses of worship and schools as a precaution.
The Jewish Community Center was designated as a meeting point for parents of Temple Israel students.
