Geely Auto: New Chinese Brand Launches in Spain with E5 & Starray EM-i Models

Geely Auto Arrives in Spain: A Recent Contender in the European EV Market

The automotive landscape in Spain is welcoming a new player: Geely Auto. Officially presented this Wednesday at Netflix studios in Madrid, the Chinese brand, part of the Geely Auto Group, aims to capture the attention of European consumers. While new car brands are becoming increasingly common, Geely’s arrival is noteworthy given its parent company’s established presence in Asia and ownership of brands like Volvo, Polestar, Smart, and Lotus Cars.

Geely’s Proven Track Record

Despite potentially being unfamiliar to many, Geely isn’t a newcomer to automotive success. In 2025, a Geely-branded model – the Galaxy Xingyuan – was China’s best-selling car, with half a million units sold. This electric utility vehicle boasts 116 horsepower and a battery capacity of up to 40.2 kWh. While the EX2 (as it’s known in some markets) isn’t currently slated for the Spanish market, Geely plans to introduce up to nine models over the next three years, suggesting its eventual inclusion is possible.

Initial Models: E5 and Starray EM-i

Geely’s initial Spanish offensive centers around two models: the all-electric Geely E5 and the plug-in hybrid Starray EM-i. The E5, a fully electric SUV, offers a range of up to 475 kilometers (WLTP) with its 68.4 kWh battery, and a smaller 60.2 kWh option is also available. It supports fast charging up to 100 kW, achieving an 80% charge in approximately 20 minutes.

The Geely E5 is a 218 HP electric SUV.

However, the Starray EM-i, a plug-in hybrid, is expected to be the more popular choice. This vehicle combines a 1.5-liter, 100 HP combustion engine with a 160 kW (218 HP) electric motor, delivering a combined output of 262 HP. It offers electric-only range of up to 136 km and a combined range exceeding 1,000 km. Fast charging capabilities allow for a 30-80% charge in around 16 minutes.

Trim Levels and Launch Offers

Both models are available in Pro, Pro+, and Max+ trim levels. The Pro version is the entry-level option, with Pro+ offering an upgraded battery. Standard features include a heat pump climate control system, keyless entry and start, heated and ventilated front seats, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, a 15.4-inch multimedia screen, 18-inch wheels, and V2L (vehicle-to-load) functionality.

Expansion Plans and After-Sales Support

Geely Auto plans to establish a network of 20 sales and service points in Spain initially, expanding to 50 by the end of the year and 100 by 2027. The company will support this expansion with an eight-year/200,000-kilometer warranty on both the vehicle and the battery. A dual-warehouse logistics system, located in the Netherlands and Spain, will ensure quick access to spare parts, with deliveries promised within 24 hours.
