Vattenfall InCharge and WirelessCar are launching a “Seamless Charging” service that removes the need for charging cards and apps at electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. By matching signals between the vehicle and the charging station, the system automates charging, authentication, and payment once a user completes a one-time registration. The service, which currently supports Volvo and Tesla vehicles equipped with the required technology, is planned to become available across all InCharge charging stations during autumn/winter.
How Does Seamless Charging Work?
The technology functions by matching signals between the vehicle and the charging station. According to Vattenfall InCharge and WirelessCar, the process relies on established industry-standard protocols to securely transfer vehicle and charging data. Once a driver registers their vehicle through the My InCharge account and authorizes data sharing via the vehicle manufacturer’s secure login page, the station recognizes the car immediately upon plug-in. The system handles the entire session, including start, stop, and payment processing, without further driver intervention.
Why Is Automated Charging Essential for EV Adoption?
Fanny Lindberg, Commercial Director at Vattenfall E-Mobility, notes that drivers currently face a complex “charging journey” requiring multiple apps, cards, and authentication methods depending on the network. By removing these manual steps, Vattenfall aims to make charging as easy as possible. Mateo Sotomayor, Vice President EV Experience at WirelessCar, adds that the best technology often removes complexity rather than adding to it, emphasizing that orchestration between vehicles and charging platforms is key to a smoother user experience.

Data from the Pilot Program
The service underwent testing during the spring across Sweden, the Netherlands, and Germany. More than 700 EV drivers participated in the pilot. While current support is limited to specific vehicle brands, the project serves as a practical model for how connected vehicle technology can integrate with the 40,000 charging points operated by Vattenfall InCharge. The transition from pilot to full-scale deployment is slated for the autumn and winter months, eventually covering the entire network.
