House Republicans are considering a fast-track process to bypass the filibuster and advance voting restrictions supported by President Donald Trump. House Speaker Mike Johnson announced a plan to establish a grant program that would incentivize states to adopt stricter election rules, including requirements for photo identification and documented proof of citizenship at the time of voting, as outlined in the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (Save America) Act.
The push for these legislative priorities comes as Speaker Johnson seeks to unify his conference following internal divisions that previously stalled spending bills and veterans’ benefits measures. Following a meeting at the White House, President Trump publicly urged Republican lawmakers to support procedural rules necessary for final votes, stating, “No more grandstanding, please!”
Johnson has expressed a need for the House to maintain momentum in its legislative work. “We have got a lot more to do. We have got to keep it going,” Johnson stated in an interview with Fox News Channel’s “Sunday Morning Futures.”
