22-Year-Old Student Pilot Left Alone After Instructor Jumps From Plane Mid-Flight

by Chief Editor

A 42-year-old flight instructor, Leandro Andrés Bertazzo, died Saturday after jumping from a Cessna 150 aircraft while in mid-air over Toledo, Argentina. According to the Argentine prosecutor’s office and reports from CNN, the 22-year-old student pilot on board successfully managed to land the plane safely despite the sudden loss of her instructor.

The Sequence of Events During Flight Instruction

The incident occurred during a training session. According to statements provided by the Flying Parrot Córdoba flight school, Bertazzo had conducted a previous lesson that day with another student, during which his behavior appeared entirely normal. The fatal incident took place during his second flight with a 22-year-old student identified as Rosario.

The student reported that while the aircraft was in flight, the instructor told her, “You know what you have to do, continue!” Following this, the student stated that Bertazzo removed his headset, unbuckled his safety harness, opened the aircraft door, and exited the plane. His body was recovered later that same day in the city of Toledo, located in central Argentina.

Did you know? Opening a door on a small aircraft like a Cessna 150 while in flight involves significant aerodynamic pressure. Eduardo Álvarez, the director of the flight school, noted that the force required to open the door would be comparable to forcing open the door of a car traveling at 200 kilometers per hour.

How the Student Managed the Emergency

Following the instructor’s departure from the aircraft, the student was left to pilot the Cessna 150 alone. Eduardo Álvarez confirmed that the student was in a state of severe shock immediately following the event. Despite this, she maintained control of the aircraft and completed a successful landing, remaining physically unharmed.

How the Student Managed the Emergency

The flight school leadership expressed surprise at the instructor’s actions. According to Álvarez, there were no indications that suggested the instructor intended to leave the aircraft. He stated that the decision was made while in the air, noting that the human mind can be unpredictable.
