Apple is preparing a major refresh of its high-end portable computer lineup, with reports indicating the company is developing new 14-inch and 16-inch laptops featuring OLED displays and direct touch screen support, according to MacRumors and 9to5Mac.
Apple Prepares New High-End Laptops With OLED Touchscreens
The upcoming devices represent Apple’s first high-end laptop redesign in at least five years, following the 2021 release of the M1 Pro and M1 Max models. While internal naming discussions have pointed toward “MacBook Ultra” branding to establish a tier above the traditional MacBook Pro, analysts note that Apple could theoretically retain existing nomenclature. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo indicate that mass production and release timelines are currently slated for late 2026 or early 2027, with the later window appearing more likely due to a global memory chip shortage. Samsung Display is reportedly lined up to supply 14.3-inch and 16.3-inch panels, which are marginally larger than current screens and suggest slimmer bezels.
OLED Display Technology and Touch Input Integration
The new laptops are expected to be the first Macs to incorporate OLED screens, replacing the mini-LED backlighting found in current MacBook Pro versions. According to MacRumors, this display shift should deliver richer colors, higher contrast ratios with true blacks, greater brightness, and improved power efficiency because individual pixels can switch off entirely rather than simply dim. The panels are expected to utilize hybrid OLED technology combining an oxide TFT backplane with a tandem two-stack structure—the same methodology used in the iPad Pro to extend panel lifespan.
In addition to the visual upgrades, the devices will mark Apple’s first inclusion of direct touch screen support on a Mac. The touch interface is designed to be interactive, expanding contextually based on the active application or system feature. It will surface items such as Siri, low battery alerts, and AirPods connection indicators in the area surrounding the camera.
Hardware Specifications and Processor Plans
Under the hood, the upcoming high-end models are expected to be powered by M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. Earlier plans regarding an “M6 Pro” and “M6 Max” have reportedly been scrapped in favor of accelerating directly to M7 Pro and M7 Max processors optimized for intensive artificial intelligence workloads, which feature upgraded neural accelerators, graphics improvements, and increased memory bandwidth. A second-generation model utilizing those advanced chips is reportedly scheduled for late 2027.
Physically, the new laptops are expected to be noticeably thinner and lighter than current models, aided by the removal of bulky mini-LED backlighting components. However, reports indicate Apple does not intend to remove essential connectivity ports such as HDMI, MagSafe, or the SD card slot.
