At least one person died and another remained missing after a small plane crashed into a single-family home in Ganderkesee, Lower Saxony, on Saturday, July 25, 2026. According to police, the four-seater Tecnam aircraft lost altitude for reasons still under investigation, tearing into the roof of the residential property.
Aircraft Strikes Home in Lower Saxony Residential Neighborhood
Emergency services rushed to a residential street in Ganderkesee in Lower Saxony at around 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, 2026, after a light aircraft lost altitude and smashed into the roof of a single-family home. The plane, which had taken off from Bremen prior to the disaster, left the property with a gaping hole and one of its wings torn off upon impact. Images and video from the scene showed the small plane sticking out of the residential property. According to German publication Bild, the plane had taken off from Bremen before the horror crash. A large police presence was deployed at the scene, along with fire department units and other emergency medical personnel.
Police in the nearby city of Oldenburg confirmed that the aircraft was carrying two people. Delmenhorst police said they are searching for another person who was reportedly on board the plane. One person was killed in the crash, and a police spokesperson told NDR Lower Saxony that police are searching for another person who is thought to have been on board. Authorities noted that the residents of the home were thankfully not inside at the time of the impact, preventing further casualties in the neighborhood, and no other injuries were reported.
Complex Recovery Operations and Structural Collapse Risks
Rescue and recovery operations proved extremely complex, lasting several hours at the crash site. Firefighters and police utilized a turntable ladder to search the damaged roof. Initially, the deceased person could not be recovered from the aircraft, and a police spokesman reported that one body was recovered from inside the aircraft in Ganderkesee, near Bremen. The Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) structural engineer is also expected to assess the building, as authorities say the building is potentially at risk of collapse due to severe structural damage.
Because of the building’s instability, emergency responders deployed drones as part of their response. Air traffic in the area has been suspended while emergency services use drones. According to local reports, emergency services plan to recover the aircraft using a crane, with the operation expected to last several hours.
Evacuations, Power Outages, and Community Support Measures
As a precautionary measure, police evacuated residents from their homes within a 100-meter (330 ft) radius of the scene. Officials emphasized that there was no danger to the public, but utility crews temporarily cut off the power supply along the entire length of the road where the house is located for safety reasons.
A crisis intervention team was called to the scene in order to provide support to people who either witnessed the crash or were present in the area when the incident took place. Additionally, a contact point for residents has been set up at the nearby Ganderkesee shooting range as investigations into the cause of the crash continue.
