The Houthi movement initiated the push against pro-government forces to secure and expand control over access points to the Red Sea, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP) reporting. Rebels are actively attempting to seize territories flanking the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a crucial maritime corridor connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. The ongoing clashes have resulted in over 300 deaths, primarily among combatants alongside several civilian casualties.

Shiite Houthi forces currently control northwestern Yemen, including the capital Sanaa and the majority of the country’s Red Sea coastline. Backed by Iran, the group has evolved into a formidable regional military power, locked in a protracted civil war against Yemen’s internationally recognized, predominantly Sunni government based in Aden.
Saudi-Led Coalition Reports Economic and Civilian Targets Hit
In response to the offensive, the Saudi-led coalition accused the Houthi movement of striking civilian and economic targets in the Saudi cities of Abha, Khamis Mushayt, Jizan, and Najran. Coalition spokesperson Turki al-Maliki stated on the social media platform X that the coalition would “take all necessary operational measures to deter these terrorist militias,” as reported by AFP.
Conversely, Houthi officials stated on X that their drone and missile operations successfully targeted the Abha International Airport, a military air base, and facilities belonging to Saudi state oil giant Aramco located in Abha and Jizan.
