Unfulfilled Potential and Role Shifts in New York
The trade brings an end to a tenure that never fully matched the expectations set when New York acquired Doval from the San Francisco Giants at the previous year’s trade deadline. Although Doval continued to feature an electric fastball surpassing 100 mph, inconsistency on the mound gradually pushed him out of high-leverage assignments. He had been relegated to mop-up duty in recent weeks under manager Aaron Boone.
Doval finished his time in New York with a 4.54 ERA across 39 2/3 innings this season, following a 4.82 ERA in 22 appearances after joining the club in 2025. While his groundball rate remained strong at 57.3% and he excelled against right-handed hitters with a .478 OPS against, left-handed batters posted a .999 OPS. Pitching coach Matt Blake noted that the organization expected a higher level of production from an arm with such distinct physical traits.
“I think he’s actually in a pretty good spot right now where hopefully a fresh start and a better role serve him well. He’s going to a team in playoff contention, so hopefully it’s something that works out well.”

Boone noted that Doval handled the transition professionally. Doval remains under team control through 2027, giving his new club multiple seasons of potential upside. To fill his spot in the short term, the Yankees recalled hard-throwing right-hander Yovanny Cruz from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

For Pittsburgh, the acquisition addresses a beleaguered bullpen that has registered 24 of the team’s 56 losses—ranking among the highest marks in Major League Baseball—and the sixth-most blown saves in the league. The Pirates sit at 55–56, remaining 2 1/2 games out of the third National League wild-card spot despite a four-game skid.
In return, the Yankees secured two younger players situated further from the majors. Alfonzo, a 22-year-old catcher and first baseman, was ranked as Pittsburgh’s No. 17 prospect and batted .238 with nine home runs and 35 RBIs across 60 games at Double-A Altoona. Cruz, an 18-year-old outfielder, posted an .843 OPS in rookie-level play with the organization’s Dominican affiliate.
With the deadline looming, general manager Brian Cashman continues to explore further upgrades. The club faces significant roster constraints due to injuries, including a Grade 2 left hamstring strain sidelining Cody Bellinger for several weeks alongside ongoing absences for Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton.
