A discarded SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket stage is on an unpowered, accidental collision course with the Moon, according to independent astronomers and NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS). The upper stage of the rocket, which measures roughly the size of a five-story building and weighs at least 4,000 kilograms on Earth, is projected to strike the lunar surface at a speed of approximately 2.43 kilometers per second on August 5, 2026.
The object’s trajectory was first discovered by astronomer Bill Gray. According to Gray’s calculations, the massive piece of space debris will land near the Einstein Crater on a part of the Moon that receives sunlight and remains visible from Earth. Analysts estimate the impact will carve out a crater measuring more than 17 meters in diameter.
NASA and Astronomical Response
“There is no danger to Earth,” said NASA spokesperson Jimi Russell, as reported by the BBC. Russell confirmed that NASA will continue tracking the rocket booster for training purposes and will subsequently observe the impact site for scientific study.
The collision represents a rare astronomical event that has drawn keen interest from both amateur and professional astronomers. However, the rocket’s upper stage separated in deep space and remained trapped in orbit rather than executing a return maneuver to Earth.
Unlike impacts on Earth, where atmospheric drag slows down incoming objects, the Moon lacks a breathable atmosphere and possesses significantly weaker gravity. As a result, the multi-ton chunk of metal will slam into the lunar surface completely unimpeded, making the kinetic event markedly more intense than a comparable explosion on Earth.
