Bungie to overhaul Marathon with separate PvE and PvP modes by 2027

Bungie is overhauling its PvPvE shooter Marathon, shifting away from a strict extraction shooter model by March 2027 to introduce separate PvE and PvP modes, progression updates, and a fully connected multi-mode system, according to development plans outlined by the studio.

Bungie Explains Why Marathon Is Changing

Developer feedback reveals that Marathon’s original design—combining high-pressure competitive PvP with difficult PvE encounters—failed to appeal to a broad enough audience. According to Bungie, newer players often found the extraction mechanics too punishing, while veteran players wanted more flexibility to match their personal playstyles.

To address this, the studio decided to support multiple player types simultaneously. Whether gamers want a purely cooperative challenge, a fast competitive match, or traditional high-risk PvEvP runs, the updated Marathon framework aims to accommodate them all.

Roadmap for Upcoming Updates: Nightfall and Symbiosis

The first step in this live-service pivot arrives in October with the Nightfall Refresh update, which focuses on refining core progression systems and improving live-service stability. However, the more substantial content shifts are scheduled for December.

The December Symbiosis update introduces a dedicated standalone PvE mode. This environment lets players explore, test builds, and finish challenges without the constant threat of rival human players. Alongside this, Symbiosis will host a temporary Team Deathmatch mode for risk-free PvP practice.

Did you know? Marathon already experimented with a purely PvE-focused mode earlier this year, setting the stage for the full standalone implementation arriving in December alongside the new Bishop character class.

Bishop Character and Cradle Progression Reworks

December also brings the new Bishop character class. Bungie describes Bishop as a high-performance samurai designed around speed, surprise attacks, and devastating short-range melee strikes.

Alongside the new character, the December rollout includes the reworked Cradle system. This feature promises greater freedom in character progression paired with a revamped tutorial designed to ease onboarding for new players. Developers are also crafting new enemy types specifically built to test squad cooperation.

The March 2027 Vision for Marathon

The core transformation culminates in March 2027. At that point, Marathon will launch a unified system linking permanent PvE, PvP, and PvEvP modes together under a stronger narrative umbrella.

This final phase introduces expanded questlines, fresh maps, and new enemies. Within a year of its initial launch, Marathon will evolve from a niche extraction shooter into a sprawling multiplayer ecosystem.

Is Marathon still an extraction shooter?
