August is delivering a major astronomical lineup highlighted by three major events, starting with a daytime solar eclipse and culminating in one of the year’s most dependable shooting star displays. The celestial schedule opens up options for observers from North America to Europe and parts of Asia, though visibility will depend heavily on local weather and geographic position.

Total Solar Eclipse on August 12 Sets the Stage

The month’s primary daytime event arrives on August 12, when a total solar eclipse crosses a narrow path over parts of northern Russia, Greenland, Iceland, northern Spain, and a small section of Portugal. Totality along this path will last up to two minutes and 18 seconds, according to reporting on the August astronomy schedule.

Dust particles from the comet enter Earth’s atmosphere at a speed of about 37 miles per second, burning up to produce bright streaks and occasional fireballs that leave glowing trails across the sky.

Stargazers hoping to catch the shooting stars do not need any special equipment. Experts recommend finding a dark outdoor location, allowing 20 to 30 minutes for eyes to adapt to the dark, and looking toward the northeast after complete nightfall.
