The multiverse keeps taking strange turns on HBO Max. In Episode 3 of Stuart Fails To Save The Universe, titled Spoiler: Bert Is Magic, viewers were treated to another dark appearance from an original The Big Bang Theory cast member. Following alternate-universe twists with Penny, the latest installment brought back Melissa Rauch as a magical iteration of Bernadette Rostenkowski, complete with her signature high-pitched voice, sensible loafers, glasses, and a terrifying demonic twist.
Why Bernadette Became a Striking Sorcerer in a Magic-Ruled Universe
This alternate reality swaps the laws of physics for spells and sorcery, leaving scientists to be burned at the stake. When Stuart (Kevin Sussman) and Kripke (John Ross Bowie) find their reality-hopping machine broken, an Alexa-powered virtual assistant voiced by Louis Mustillo directs them to master sorceress Bernadette Rostenkowski for help. They quickly discover she is entirely out of business.
As Deadline reported, Bernadette explains that her powers were stripped because the Wizards Guild of America claimed she used them during a strike. The episode features heavy inside jokes skewering the real-world 2023 WGA strike, which series co-creators Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady, and Zak Penn all participated in.

Bernadette tells Stuart and Kripke that she was expelled from the guild after casting a spell during the walkout to resurrect her neighbor’s rescue dog, Chocolate Chip, after the animal was hit by several cars. While Kripke questions how saving a dog violates a strike, Bernadette notes that 90% of the guild’s members do not even work yet still hold voting power—a jab mirroring real-world industry discussions about non-working union members.
Stepping Back Into Sensible Loafers and Motion-Capture Suits
For Rauch, returning to the character required a mix of familiar habits and entirely new physical challenges. On her drive to set, she called her mother—whose voice originally inspired Bernadette’s high register—and reviewed an old sitcom clip to ensure she was still in the right pocket, as TVLine detailed. Her first day back on set featured a scene opposite Sussman and John Ross Bowie, which she described as feeling so wonderful… It just felt like old times.

The production scale, however, far exceeded anything from the original sitcom. Instead of standard multi-camera studio tapings, the team shot each episode on a massive, feature-film scale. Rauch wore a motion-capture suit to bring a 60-foot demonic version of Bernadette to life, stomping through an entire miniature city built to represent Pasadena.

So it’d be extremely different from anything you ever played.’ And then he told me the cast, and I was just absolutely ecstatic.”

Magic Battles and Wil Wheaton’s Enforcer Cameo
Complications escalate quickly in the magic-themed installment. To restore her powers, Bernadette requests a reversal spell requiring the blood of an innocent, a qualification Stuart easily meets and provides. Before she completes her potion, Wil Wheaton, who’s a wizard in this universe, shows up to warn Stuart against trusting the sorceress.

As Variety noted, Bert (Brian Posehn)—who proves to be a remarkably powerful wizard capable of turning Coca-Cola into Diet Coke and summoning puppies—engages in a direct sorcery duel with Wheaton’s mage. Bert defeats Wheaton, but Bernadette successfully finishes her potion, transforming into a towering monster bent on taking the multiverse machine and ruling the universe. Ultimately, Bert uses his magic to transport Stuart and his companions out of danger just before complete destruction.
