Spider-Man: Brand New Day
has officially set a new record for the largest North American opening weekend in history. Sony Pictures confirmed that the film secured $360 million in ticket sales across theaters in the United States and Canada. The performance surpassed the previous record held by Avengers: Endgame,
which earned $357 million in 2019.
Record-Breaking Opening Weekend
While initial studio projections on Sunday estimated a $355 million debut across 4,487 theaters, stronger than anticipated Sunday ticket sales allowed the film to surpass the long-standing benchmark. Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, addressed the achievement in a statement, noting, records are made to be broken, but we will take great pride in this one, for as long as we hold it.
The film, which is the fourth Spider-Man movie featuring Tom Holland, joins a select group of domestic openers to exceed the $300 million threshold. Prior to this release, the record was held by Avengers: Endgame,
followed by Avengers: Infinity War
with $257 million in 2018, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens
with $247 million in 2015.
Continued Theatrical Momentum
Following its historic launch, Spider-Man: Brand New Day
has maintained a rapid pace at the box office. During its second weekend, the film earned $144.5 million domestically. This performance marks a milestone for Sony, as no previous film from the studio has cleared $100 million in its second weekend. The total came close to the sophomore frame record held by The Force Awakens,
which earned $149.2 million in 2015.
Within just 10 days of release, the production has accrued $1.67 billion globally. The film achieved the status of the highest-grossing movie of the year in only seven days, displacing “Toy Story 5,” which has earned $1.07 billion worldwide. To date, the film has grossed $655.1 million in U.S. and Canadian cinemas, with international receipts exceeding $1 billion.

The success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day,
alongside the performance of Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” has significantly bolstered the Hollywood box office. According to Rentrak, ticket sales are currently running 18.5% ahead of last year’s figures. The industry has seen five films cross the $1 billion threshold this year, marking the highest volume of such hits since 2019.
“The Odyssey” has also reached major financial milestones, crossing $1 billion in global ticket sales. In its fourth weekend, the Universal Pictures release added $31.5 million domestically, bringing its global total to $1.1 billion. The film now ranks as Nolan’s highest-grossing box-office hit, surpassing The Dark Knight Rises
and The Dark Knight.
A significant portion of this success is attributed to large-format screens; with $147.3 million earned domestically on IMAX, “The Odyssey” is currently IMAX’s highest-grossing domestic release of all time.
