A Russian military officer described as a Ukrainian defector was killed in a bomb attack in Crimea, with a woman arrested for allegedly acting on Ukrainian special services’ orders.
The death of Robert Shageyev, a former Ukrainian naval officer who defected to Russia during the 2014 annexation of Crimea, occurred in Sevastopol, the biggest city in Russian-annexed Crimea, on Thursday. Shageyev, who commanded Ukraine’s only submarine, the Zaporizhzhia, during the annexation, was killed in the attack. Mikhail Razvozhayev, the regional governor, stated that a woman was arrested on suspicion of assassinating Shageyev on behalf of Ukrainian special services, with the FSB security service confirming she was a Russian national.
The Defector’s Death and the Arrest
Myrotvorets, a Ukrainian website tracking individuals deemed war criminals or traitors, reported that Shageyev had been “liquidated.” Razvozhayev described the crime as “cynical,” stating that the arrested woman acted on the orders of Ukrainian special services
and showed no remorse for her actions.
Shageyev’s defection made him a high-profile target, with his role in the 2014 annexation and subsequent service in Russia’s 4th Independent Submarine Brigade drawing particular scrutiny.
As a commander of the Zaporizhzhia, the Ukrainian navy’s only submarine until it fell under Russian control, his defection was among the most notable during Crimea’s annexation. Separately, a Russian lawmaker claimed that Moscow had handed over 261 bodies of Ukrainian servicemen to Kyiv, while Ukraine had transferred 24, reflecting the ongoing exchange of remains under disputed circumstances.
Broader Implications of the Attack
The assassination coincided with other developments in the war, including a Russian drone strike on a passenger train in the Odesa region, which killed two crew members. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, stating that the drone destroyed an ordinary passenger train locomotive with a jet-powered drone. There were 340 people on the train,
and questioned the attackers’ awareness of the civilian target.
International Reactions and Unanswered Questions
The attack also drew international attention, particularly after the Polish prime minister, Donald Tusk, revealed that a plot to kill a Ukrainian American citizen in Warsaw had been thwarted. Tusk stated that the suspect, allegedly recruited by Russian intelligence, was detained on 7 August, marking the first time someone on the order of Russia
had allegedly targeted a U.S. citizen on NATO soil. The U.S. State Department confirmed awareness of the reports but declined to comment further.
Ukraine has proposed a deal to halt attacks on civilian ships in the Black Sea, aiming to reopen a critical grain corridor. However, Moscow has yet to respond to the offer.
