The senators’ letter referenced past instances where corporate leaders allegedly secured favorable treatment from the Trump administration. Apple CEO Tim Cook, Rolex CEO Jean-Frédéric Dufour, and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang all received favorable treatment after gifting Trump and/or giving money. “This aligns with a troubling pattern of using gifts to influence trade decisions,” the senators wrote.
Under U.S. law, bribery occurs when “a corruptly offered … offer or promise of something of value to a public official … to influence an official act.” The senators are seeking details on the ring’s valuation, payment sources, and decision-making timelines by August 24. Failure to respond could trigger further investigations.
