United Airlines announced its largest international expansion in company history, adding 10 new international cities and three new routes for the summer 2027 season. The massive network growth features debut service on the new Airbus A321XLR aircraft and extends the carrier’s reach across Europe and Asia from multiple U.S. hubs.
United Airlines Expands Global Footprint for Summer 2027
United Airlines is expanding its global footprint further than ever before, rolling out an ambitious international route map for the summer 2027 season that marks the largest international network expansion in company history. The Chicago-based carrier revealed a total of 10 new international destinations and 13 new routes during an announcement event at Newark Liberty International Airport attended by CEO Scott Kirby, Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Nocella, and Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances Patrick Quayle.
The annual route drop builds on nearly a decade of aggressive international growth. According to company disclosures, United has added 58 international destinations to its global network since 2017, cementing its position as a dominant carrier across both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. As the world’s largest airline, United now flies to more than 160 international destinations.
“The creative and strategic way we’ve expanded our international network since the pandemic has made all the difference, not only for our customers and employees, but also as a way to differentiate United and build a brand focused on customers,” Scott Kirby, CEO of United Airlines, said at the Newark event.
Newark Hub Captures Eight New European Destinations
The biggest beneficiary of the 2027 schedule update is United’s Newark Liberty International Airport hub, which gains eight new nonstop routes, all concentrated in Europe. Seven of the 10 total new destinations represent places that currently lack any nonstop service from the United States by any carrier, while nine of the ten new cities are located in Europe. Only two of the destinations are currently served by another U.S. airline: Catania (Sicily) and Olbia (Sardinia).
Travelers looking for less-traveled paths will see America’s first nonstop flights to Slovenia and Luxembourg. The network additions also include brand-new service to destinations in Japan, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and France, with flights kicking off in waves between March and June 2027.
Airbus A321XLR Deploys on Long-Range Narrow-Body Routes
A major catalyst for this expansion is the operational rollout of United’s newest international aircraft, the Airbus A321XLR, debuted at Newark Liberty International Airport as the ‘Born to Explore’ A321XLR. Since ordering the jet way back in 2019, United has featured the long-range, single-aisle plane prominently in this crop of new destinations.
The A321XLR will anchor inaugural service to specific cities and features lie-flat seats in United Polaris and Economy Plus seats with extra elbow room across an open middle seat.

Complete 2027 International Cities and Additional Hub Routes
Starting as early as March 2027, the airline will fly to 10 new international cities across Europe and Asia: San Francisco (SFO) to Okinawa, Japan; Washington Dulles (IAD) to Toulouse, France; and from Newark (EWR) to Luxembourg City, Luxembourg; Marseille, France; Ibiza, Spain; Valencia, Spain; Terceira, Portugal; Ljubljana, Slovenia; Olbia (Sardinia), Italy; and Catania (Sicily), Italy.
Beyond the primary 10-city expansion, the airline is introducing three additional routes connecting existing international destinations to different U.S. departure points. This includes a new daily year-round service from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Kansai International Airport (KIX) in Osaka, Japan, starting March 27 using a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. Additional routes include Denver International Airport (DEN) to Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) starting May 27 with daily year-round service on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, and Dulles International Airport (IAD) near Washington, D.C., to Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) starting May 28 operating three times weekly on a Boeing 767-300ER.
The new Los Angeles service to Osaka builds on United’s existing service to the Japanese city from its San Francisco International Airport (SFO) hub, and the airline will plan to resume flights from San Francisco to Tel Aviv, Israel. As for Milan, executives noted it was the biggest international market that didn’t have nonstop service from the airline’s hub at IAD. Furthermore, the airline will serve more destinations in Japan, Spain, Portugal, Italy and France than any other U.S. carrier.
