HDFC Bank CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan to Step Down in October

According to Reuters, HDFC Bank Chief Executive Sashidhar Jagdishan has decided not to seek reappointment when his current term ends on October 26, 2026. India’s largest private lender announced the departure on Saturday, setting up a fast-tracked leadership transition amid recent governance reviews.

Succession Plans and External Candidates

Deputy managing director Kaizad Bharucha stands as the senior-most internal contender, though Nuvama executive director Anand Dama told Reuters that the likelihood of appointing an external candidate remains high. The board must recommend at least three candidates to the Reserve Bank of India for approval.

Executive Penalties and Regulatory Scrutiny

Although an independent legal review found no evidence supporting Chakraborty’s concerns, the board penalized three top executives in July. According to Reuters, the bank imposed monetary penalties of ₹1 lakh each on Jagdishan, Chief Financial Officer Srinivasan Vaidyanathan, and Retail Assets Group Head Arvind Vohra after concluding their involvement in deposit rate-setting with the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation constituted business overreach.

Share Performance and Legal Challenges

According to Reuters, foreign investors held nearly a 40% share in HDFC Bank as of June. The stock price has fallen 27% since the start of the year, slipping to a two-year low on Thursday following a proposed federal securities class-action suit filed by U.S. law firms. HDFC Bank stated to Reuters that it believes the lawsuit is without merit and intends to defend itself vigorously. Meanwhile, standalone net profit rose 5% to 190.60 billion Indian rupees for the quarter ended June 30, with gross non-performing loans remaining low at 1.17% of total loans.
