Baker Mayfield has never operated without a chip on his shoulder. Long before he became a Heisman Trophy winner and a first-overall NFL draft pick, the quarterback spent his youth in Texas high school football writing down the names of anyone who doubted him, using the slights as fuel for a career built on confrontation.
Now, as he prepares for his ninth NFL season and faces the final year before free agency, Mayfield has trained his sights on a familiar kind of motivation. With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers picked by many to finish with a losing record, the quarterback is betting on himself once again.

Mayfield told ESPN that he thinks the team is going to shock a lot of people this year, noting that it cannot be avoided because there are TVs everywhere. He expressed confidence in the face of predictions that the team would have a losing record, saying, Hell yeah I am… we’ll see.
That competitive fire has defined his professional journey ever since general manager Jason Licht called him in the spring of 2023. At the lowest point of a turbulent stretch that saw him play for three teams in eight months, Mayfield fielded interest from the New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens before choosing Tampa Bay on an $8.5 million prove-it deal.
Family Reconciliation After Years of Estrangement
While Mayfield prepares for high-stakes football on the field, his personal life has undergone a profound healing process away from the stadium. For several years, he remained estranged from his family following financial and legal disputes.
Mayfield and his wife previously filed a lawsuit alleging that Camwood Capital Management Group—run by his father, James, and brother, Matt—had funneled money from private accounts without authorization after transferring funds through their company, Team BRM. Although a settlement was reached, Mayfield claimed in 2024 that the defendants had failed to adhere to the terms and had not repaid any money under an agreement scheduled to start on September 30 of that year.
The birth of his children has since shifted his perspective. He and his wife welcomed a baby girl, Kova, and a son born in April. Those milestones opened the door to family reconciliation.
“In the past few months, I’ve been reconnected with my family. It’s been good. Also, for them to have two grandbabies, it’s tough. What’s in the past is in the past. I had the ability to forgive, and that was what I wanted to get across. But we’re here, and the door is open. The past few months, we have made good progress and began reconnecting.”
The thaw began publicly in October 2025, when Mayfield shared a heartfelt video message dedicated to his mother on ESPN, praising her unconditional love through every up and down. When Mayfield and his wife brought their daughter to visit his parents around her first birthday, the meeting proved transformative for the family dynamics.
Carrying Momentum Through the Ranks
Before establishing himself as a reliable franchise starter in Tampa Bay, Mayfield endured a winding road that included stops with the Cleveland Browns and Carolina Panthers. His career has consistently thrived on adversity, from walking on at Texas Tech in 2013 to transferring to Oklahoma, where he became the first walk-on in college football history to win the Heisman Trophy.
