Aging Orbiters Prompt Dedicated Communications Backbone
The MTN project addresses an aging orbital communications architecture at Mars. Currently, NASA relies on two aging spacecraft—Mars Odyssey, launched in 2001, and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, launched in 2005—alongside the European Space Agency’s Mars Express and Trace Gas Orbiter to relay data from the Curiosity and Perseverance rovers. Unlike these existing assets, which divide their resources between scientific observation and relay services, the MTN will serve as a dedicated communications craft.
