University of East Anglia Researchers Target RUNX2 Protein

According to Dr Darrell Green, Lead Researcher at UEA’s Norwich Medical School, targeting this protein yielded unexpected benefits for bone health and metabolism in post-menopausal mice following an eight-week treatment period.

The team observed that treated mice maintained greater bone volume and better preservation of the delicate honeycomb-like structures inside bones that help them withstand stress compared to untreated control groups.

Menopause can disrupt this balance, accelerating bone loss and increasing fracture risk, particularly in the hip, spine and wrist, as oestrogen levels fall. Many existing osteoporosis treatments work by slowing bone breakdown.

Unexpected Effects on Body Fat and Metabolism in Preclinical Tests

Beyond skeletal improvements, the study revealed that CADD522 appeared to affect metabolism as well as bone. Mice receiving CADD522 weighed less than their untreated counterparts despite eating the same amount of food, according to the university’s findings.

Brain tissue examinations further showed that the drug appeared to reverse several menopause-related changes in fatty acids.
