To process the massive volume of material from Bianfu Cave without prohibitive costs and delays, the research team employed a two-step sorting method. Scientists first categorized the bone fragments by shape before applying a protein-analysis technique to confirm which pieces originated from ancient humans. This workflow successfully isolated three Denisovan specimens from two different stratigraphic layers, uncovering two skull fragments alongside the historic forearm bone.

Unique Physical Traits and Movement Patterns of Denisovans

The newly analyzed radius bone displays a distinct combination of anatomical characteristics that separates Denisovans from both Neanderthals and modern humans. While the bone features a large upper joint similar to Neanderthal arm bones, its overall shape and the geometry of its neck region align more closely with modern humans.

“This combination of traits suggests that Denisovans probably had unique movement patterns and behaviors that set them apart from both Neanderthals and our own species,” said Fu Qiaomei, a professor from the IVPP, describing the significance of the morphology in the published research.
