Russia Ruling Party Leads Preliminary Vote Tallies in Wartime Election

President Vladimir Putin cast the parliamentary contest as a test of support for his military campaign in Ukraine, which entered its fifth year. The final day of voting coincided with what state news agency TASS described as the biggest drone assault on the Russian capital since the full-scale conflict began in February 2022. Hundreds of Ukrainian drones targeted Moscow and surrounding districts, damaging a facility at the Moscow oil refinery and causing fires that sent thick smoke billowing over the city’s outskirts.

According to regional governors and election commissions, the strikes killed at least three people in the Moscow region and two additional individuals in Russian-controlled parts of Ukraine’s Kherson region, including an election official. Russian authorities also stated that Flamingo cruise missiles were fired during the barrage.

“The biggest attack by enemy drones has been repelled,” Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Telegram. “This unprecedented attack was clearly planned with the aim of disrupting the elections. The enemy did not succeed.”

The Russian Defence Ministry reported intercepting nearly 2,000 drones and eight cruise missiles nationwide over a 24-hour window, pledging to retaliate with intensified strikes against Ukrainian military targets. Government officials maintained that Kyiv sought to disrupt the electoral process through the aerial bombardment, though election authorities insisted that the voting infrastructure remained largely operational.

Turnout Figures and Systemic Opposition Results

Central Election Commission Chairwoman Ella Pamfilova reported that voter participation reached nearly 57 percent by early evening on Sunday, with final turnout settling at 56.66 percent.

Preliminary returns showed the Communist Party on 14.2 percent of the vote, followed by the LDPR with 10.7 percent, New People with 9.7 percent, and Just Russia at 6.6 percent. Independent watchdogs and exiled opposition figures challenged the official narrative, pointing to restrictions that barred genuine anti-war challengers from the ballot.
