90s Boy Band Mall Tours Are Back, Sponsored by Gap

Gap is launching a collaboration with emerging boy band Just Your Type (JYT) as the apparel retailer’s first project for a new fashiontainment platform. According to company statements released on Tuesday, the initiative aims to use iconic brand power to co-produce a docuseries, design a capsule collection, and launch a U.S. shopping center tour.

The Band Behind the Brand Partnership

JYT is a five-member boy band consisting of performers Recker Eans, Toby Green, Caden Adamonis, Bryan Chan, and Tyler George. The group released its debut single, “What U Want,” late last year and has four songs out in total.

Music executives have backed the group since its inception. In January, Republic Records signed JYT in partnership with Grammy-nominated songwriter and producer Freddy Wexler, who developed the group. Wexler has worked on hits for artists including Justin Bieber, Blackpink, and Ariana Grande.

“From the moment these five kids stood in a room together, I knew we had something special,” Wexler told UDiscover Music, a Universal Music Group-backed site. “JYT isn’t a manufactured boy band; they chose each other. America hasn’t launched a global boy band in decades, and these kids are about to change that.”

Positioning and Target Demographics

Ranging in age from 15 to 17, members of JYT bring prior entertainment industry experience to the group. The lineup includes two former touring members of Kidz Bop, alongside performers who have worked as backup dancers in music videos and appeared in television guest roles.

Industry observers note that the collaboration reflects Gap’s ongoing strategy to capture Gen Z and Gen Alpha consumers. The clothing brand previously ran a viral 2025 ad campaign featuring the girl group Katseye performing a choreographed dance in denim. That effort followed the 2024 hire of designer Zac Posen to boost the company’s cultural profile.

Discussing the Katseye campaign on an investor call regarding third-quarter results, Gap CEO Richard Dickson called the effort a “true cultural takeover.” During that same quarter, comparable sales rose five percent, driven by the success of the advertising push, according to CNBC.

Reviving the Traditional Retail Tour

The upcoming campaign relies on a revival of the shopping centre tour format utilized by 1990s and 2000s pop acts like New Kids on the Block, the Backstreet Boys, and Britney Spears to build audiences and drive physical foot traffic.

“It makes a ton of sense” for Gap to revive this strategy, said communications professional and trends expert Max Valiquette. “It’s turning to a boy band to kind of test whether entertainment can fully move the needle on apparel sales, but not working with an established boy band. It is working with a boy band who are actually not established at all. And it’s building Gap while the band gets built.”

Valiquette added that youth-driven trends inevitably influence broader consumer habits. “You’re doing this because if they say something is cool or interesting, it does tend to have an impact on older demographics and drive what they purchase, as well.”

CBC News reached out to Gap regarding whether the upcoming mall tour will visit Canada, but has not received a response.
