Authorities in Sibiu County activated a Red Intervention Plan at an event venue in Avrig after 30 wedding guests showed acute symptoms of food poisoning, according to the Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (ISU) Sibiu. The outbreak prompted the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA) to suspend operations at Palatul Brukenthal din Avrig and issue a 30,000-lei fine following emergency checks by DSVSA Sibiu inspectors.
Emergency responders mobilized quickly to the scene outside the Avrig restaurant after receiving distress calls. ISU Sibiu deployed three SMURD crews, including one medical unit, alongside six ambulances from the Ambulance Service (SAJ) and a specialized transport vehicle for multiple victims. Medical personnel evaluated 30 of the 80 wedding attendees directly in the venue’s parking lot.
Regulatory Crackdown and Food Safety Penalties
Following the mass illness, inspectors from DSVSA Sibiu initiated urgent verifications at the Avrig wedding venue and collected food samples from the dishes prepared and served during the event. ANSVSA levied a 30,000-lei fine against Palatul Brukenthal din Avrig and ordered an immediate suspension of its operational activities. According to ANSVSA, the penalties stemmed from severe hygiene deficiencies, the commercialization and use of food products lacking identification elements, and improper maintenance of production and storage spaces.
“Siguranţa alimentelor şi protejarea sănătăţii consumatorilor reprezintă o prioritate pentru ANSVSA. Inspectorii DSVSA Sibiu acţionează cu maximă operativitate pentru identificarea cauzelor acestui incident, iar măsurile legale vor fi dispuse imediat ce verificările vor fi finalizate,” stated ANSVSA President Dr. Alexandru Bociu.
