A 40-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the theft of brass memorial plaques valued at more than $2,000 from central Christchurch, according to Police. The thefts, which targeted sites including Latimer Square and the Bridge of Remembrance, took place overnight between Tuesday, August 11, and Wednesday, August 12, according to Superintendent Lane Todd.
Christchurch Memorial Plaques Stolen From Historic Sites
The stolen items included brass plaques removed from prominent central city locations. According to reporting from chrislynchmedia.com, one of the stolen items was a plaque from the CTV earthquake memorial in Latimer Square, which commemorates the victims of the Canterbury earthquakes. Christchurch City Council Head of Parks Rupert Bool confirmed to chrislynchmedia.com that the CTV memorial plaque had been taken and stated that the council intends to replace it using a different material. Police launched an investigation in mid-August following the discoveries at Latimer Square and the Bridge of Remembrance, appealing to the public for help, CCTV footage, and dashcam recordings to identify a man captured in police images.
CCTV Footage and Helmet Infraction Lead to Arrest
Investigators pursued multiple lines of inquiry before breaking the case open using camera footage. According to Superintendent Todd, officers reviewed CCTV recordings and linked a cyclist in the area to the thefts. “A man was pulled over for not wearing a helmet just before the thefts,” Todd said, adding that “following an eagle-eyed review of camera footage, we were able to make an arrest.” Todd expressed gratitude to the investigation team for their work. The 40-year-old man is scheduled to appear in court on Friday, October 2, facing theft charges, as reported by chrislynchmedia.com.
