Title: Bulgarians Disillusioned: 60% Believe the Country is Off Track

Nearly 60% of Bulgarians express disappointment or despair over the country’s direction, according to a traditional year-end survey by Alpha Research. Conducted between December 1-10 with 1000 adult respondents, the study reveals a stark contrast between Bulgarians’ personal lives and national sentiment.

While 22% felt 2023 was better personally than the previous year, only 7% believed Bulgaria was moving in the right direction. Conversely, 58.5% are disillusioned or hopeless about Bulgaria’s path, more than double the number satisfied with their personal lives. This divide suggests a paradox: can one feel positive about personal circumstances while viewing the broader societal landscape as increasingly risky and threatening?

Alpha Research offers three hypotheses to explain this disparity:

  1. Every Man for Himself: Many Bulgarians, especially those with family members working abroad and sending money home, adopt this mindset. They are dissatisfied with the state but focus on personal survival.
  2. Not at My Door Yet: The middle class feels less immediate impact from economic woes, as unemployment remains low, and inflation is contained. Until daily life is directly affected, the crisis remains a distant threat.
  3. Crisis as the New Normal: After several years of political instability, Bulgarians are adjusting to prolonged crisis. They strive to make the most of their current circumstances, despite the uncertain political climate.

Looking ahead, Bulgarians remain pessimistic about global trends. 45% expect worldwide problems to worsen by 2025, compared to just 26% anticipating improvement. Despite personal optimism, Bulgarians universally struggle with national uncertainty and global anxiety.
