A significant percentage of Ukrainians, 45%, believe that a victory for Republican candidate Donald Trump in the American presidential election could potentially accelerate peace in the Russian-Ukrainian war, according to a recent survey conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KMIS). The poll, carried out from December 2 to 17, also revealed that almost 14% of respondents think that such an outcome would make peace less likely.
The poll data, obtained from Eurointegration, highlights a complex spectrum of opinions among the Ukrainian populace regarding the potential impact of a Trump presidency on their ongoing conflict with Russia.
Breaking down the 45% who envision a Trump victory as a step towards peace, 15% strongly believe it would bring the conflict to a decisive close, while 30% anticipate a more modest advancement. On the other end of the spectrum, 14% of Ukrainians feared that a Trump win would increase the war’s remoteness, with 5% predicting a significant setback and 9% a minor one. The remainder of the respondents either expected no change or were undecided.
When asked about the prospect of a fair global settlement for Ukraine under a Trump administration, the number of optimists dipped to 23%. Conversely, 31% believed the opposite – that such an outcome would prove unfavorable. However, a substantial 29% predicted a compromise, with both Ukrainian and Russian demands being addressed, though it was unclear which would take precedence. The remaining 18% remained unsure about the potential consequences.
In the midst of this election hype, longtime political sparring partners, U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, have been exchanging conciliatory signals. Trump, renowned for his affinity for the Russian leader, has often expressed his desire to end the Ukrainian conflict swiftly if re-elected.
